THE PAINTED ROCK SHELTERS OF WADI KENTA (MEHAIRIS, RASD) (*)

Abstract In 1995 the University of Girona and the Ministry of Culture of the RASD began a project of study of the country's archeological remains and this cooperation led us to the site of Wadi Kenta. It's rocks shelters, besides a rich lithic industry and some fragments of ceramics, contain a wide diversity of inedited paintings in different styles.

Although a large part of them have not been preserved very well, on our first approach we can distinguish two main units. The first one is naturalist and represents especially anthropomorphous but also animals like the gazelle, the elephant, the rhinoceros, the giraffe, and some bovines.

The other one expresses a large and complex range of signs with a sense still unknown to us. Like other painted sites in the Western Sahara, we can find a lot of positive red hands painted too. Almost all of these works are painted in red or ochre and only a few of them are white, black or mixed. At this moment we cannot offer an accurate chronology for these paintings but it seems that they belong to different periods and that the same styles exist in other painted sites of the RASD like Rekeiz or Lejuad. "L'art de Taref" (Poster of two panels) Poster Abstract The site, the paintings and some prehistoric remains of Wadi Kenta are shown in these panels.
